The History of Robotics

Learn about some of the fascinating moments that have helped define the history of robotics. 320 BC
Greek philosopher Aristotle made this famous quote:
“If every tool, when ordered, or even of its own accord, could do the work that befits it... then there would be no need either of apprentices for the master workers or of slaves for the lords.”

Around 1495 Leonardo da Vinci sketched plans for a humanoid robot.

1700 - 1900
Between 1700 and 1900 a number of life-sized automatons were created including a famous mechanical duck made by Jacques de Vaucanson that could crane its neck, flap its wings and even swallow food.

Henry Ford installs the world’s first moving conveyor belt-based assembly line in his car factory. A Model T can be assembled in 93 minutes.

1920
Karel Capek coins the word ‘robot’ to describe machines that resemble humans in his play called Rossums Universal Robots. The play was about a society that became enslaved by the robots that once served them.
This idea is now a common theme in popular culture, ie Frankenstein, Terminator, The Matrix etc.

1932
The first true robot toy was produced in Japan. The ‘Lilliput’ was a wind-up toy which walked. It was made from tinplate and stood just 15cm tall.

Alan Turing releases his paper “On Computable Numbers” which begins the computer revolution.


1941
Legendary science fiction writer Isaac Asimov writes the short story ‘Liar!’ in which he describes the Three Laws of Robotics. His stories were recompiled into the volume “I, Robot” in 1950 – later reproduced as a movie starring Will Smith.

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

1950
Alan Turing proposes a test to determine if a machine truly has the power to think for itself. To pass the test a machine must be indistinguishable from a human during conversation. It has become known as the ‘Turing Test’.

1954
George Devol and Joe Engleberger design the first programmable robot ‘arm’. This later became the first industrial robot, completing dangerous and repetitive tasks on an assembly line at General Motors (1962).

The Soviet Union launches ‘Sputnik’, the first artificial orbiting satellite. This marks the beginning of the space race.

1964
The IBM 360 becomes the first computer to be mass-produced.

Stanley Kubrick makes Arthur C. Clark's, 2001: A Space Odyssey into a movie. It features HAL, an onboard computer that develops a mind of its own.

1969
The U.S. successfully use the latest in computing, robotic and space technology to land Neil Armstrong on the moon.

1977
The first Star Wars movie is released. George Lucas‘s movie inspires a new generation of researchers through his image of a human future shared with robots such as the now famous R2-D2 and C-3PO.

1986
The first LEGO based educational products are put on the market and Honda launches a project to build a walking humanoid robot.

Carnegie Universities eight-legged walking robot, Dante ll, successfully descends into Mt Spur to collect volcanic gas samples.

1997
On May 11, a computer built by IBM known as Deep Blue beat world chess champion Garry Kasparov.
The first Robocup tournament is held in Japan. The goal of Robocup is to have a fully automated team of robots beat the worlds best soccer team by the year 2050.

LEGO launches its first Robotics Inventions System.

1999
Sony releases the first version of AIBO, a robotic dog with the ability to learn, entertain and communicate with its owner. More advanced versions have followed.

Honda debuts ASIMO, the next generation in its series of humanoid robots.

2004
Epsom release the smallest known robot, standing 7cm high and weighing just 10 grams. The robot helicopter is intended to be used as a ‘flying camera’ during natural disasters.

Researchers at Cornell University build the first self-replicating robot. Each ‘robot’ is made up of a small tower of computerized cubes which link together through the use of magnets.

2008
After being first introduced in 2002, the popular Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner has sold over 2.5 million units, proving that there is a strong demand for this type of domestic robotic technology.

Wonder 7 for WIN-7

1. Taskbar icons have keyboard shortcuts. To open these applications through shortcut keys, simply hold down the Windows key and press the number on the keyboard that corresponds with the icon, working from the Start "orb" button to the right. For example, if Internet Explorer is the first icon, press Windows-1 to open IE.
2. You can move items on the taskbar. I know it feels like this was already possible in Windows XP and Vista, but this actually is a new Windows 7 feature.

3. Paint and WordPad use the new ribbon interface. In addition, Paint has new brushes, and both applications have new Save As options. However, you still can't open more than one document or picture at a time.
4. There is a great new tool for supporting family members and friends from afar.Click the Start button and type psr to open the Problem Steps Recorder. This tool can capture step by step (even take screenshots) what a person is doing. When they stop the recording, the session is bundled as an MHTML file and compressed for easy emailing back to support, which in most cases is you. (An MHTML file is an IE-only HTML variant.)
5. You can have more than one clock on your notification area. For those of us who work with people in other time zones, you can display clocks for each of those regions. Click the clock in the notification area and choose Change Date and Time Settings. Select the Additional Clocks tab to display as many as two other clocks and to set their time zones. (This feature actually came with Vista, but few people know about it.)
6. There's a fast way to run a program using administrator privileges. To open an application with administrator permissions, you usually locate it through the Start menu, right-click the application, and choose Run as Administrator from the contextual menu. However, you can also simply type the name in the Instant Search bar at the base of the Start menu and press Ctrl-Shift-Enter.
7. There is a replacement to the Security Center called the Action Center. Located in the Control Panel, it provides both security and maintenance information for your system. It also provides links to many other features such as backup settings.

8.5 Lakh New Jobs Expected in 2014: Survey


Job seekers can look forward to a prosperous new year as more than 8.5 lakh new jobs are expected across various sectors, including FMCG and healthcare, says a survey.
Coming against the backdrop of uncertain economic conditions, the projected number of new jobs in 2014 is higher than the estimated 7.9 lakh employment opportunities created this year, according to the survey by recruitment platform MyHiringClub.com.
The findings are based on a study conducted among more than 5,600 firms across 12 industry sectors. All the opportunities have been projected in for the organised sector, it added.
Besides FMCG, more jobs are expected in healthcare, IT, retail and hospitality sectors.
"Last calendar year was not good either for job seekers or for employers due to uncertain and fluctuated economical and political conditions. 2014 is coming with positive vibes for job-seekers and expected to create 8.5 lakh new jobs in different sectors,"  MyHiringClub.com CEO Rajesh Kumar said.
"Finding employees who have employability or job readiness skills that help fit into and remain in the work environment is a real problem and threatening to growth. These issues need to be addressed on priority," he added.
MyHiringClub.com's survey showed that FMCG would lead the chart and is expected to generate 1.5 lakh new jobs, followed by healthcare (1.33 lakh), IT and ITeS (1.21 lakh), retail (86,700) and hospitality (83,400).
Banking and financial services (61,400), manufacturing and engineering (51,500), education, training and consultancy (42,900), media and entertainment (42,800) and real estate (38,700) are also expected to create job opportunities.
Another HR expert Prachi Kumari, Director at Sat-n-Merc Manpower Consultant said: "Recruitment activity in 2013 went slow beyond our expectation across every levels, majorly recruitments were done only to replace major gaps.
"Coming year 2014 seems very promising. To increase their revenue, companies need to feel the long time vacant positions and also they have to create more jobs as compared to 2013.
Overall, it seems the worst condition is over for the job market and we are entering in a zone of another two years of positive growth if not more," she added.

India, Russia may build supercomputer to rival China's Tianhe-2

BANGALORE: Russian supercomputing company RSC group and the Russian Academy of Sciences have proposed collaboration with India to set up advanced supercomputing facilities that will rival China's Tianhe-2, the world's fastest supercomputer. 

"India has many skills for building supercomputers. It is very strong in software," said Alexey Shmelev, co-founder and chief operations officer of RSC group and delegate to the Russian Academy of Sciences. "I am ready to share technology with India. I guess there would not be many players who are willing to do so." 

In a letter last month, Boris Shabanov of the Russian Academy of Sciences has invited a delegation from the Indian Institute of Science and the Karnataka government to explore the possibility of a supercomputing centre in Bangalore. 

CNR Rao, a Bharat Ratna awardee who heads the scientific advisory council to the prime minister, said it is difficult to assess a potential collaboration right away, but was of the view that "the Chinese are way ahead". 

Tianhe-2, developed by China's National University of Defense Technology, retained its position as the world's number one system according to TOP500 project which ranks the most powerful computer systems in the world. It beat Titan, a US supercomputer which briefly held the world speed crown. India's supercomputer Param Yuva-II is ranked at 83 while Russia's Lomonosov supercomputer is ranked at 37. 

If the joint cooperation between Russia and India is found viable, it can result in a computing system as big as a basketball court that can perform approximately as many operations per second as several million personal computers. 

In 2009, India had taken a huge leap in supercomputing with EKA which was then the fourth fastest supercomputer in the world and fastest in Asia. "But in the next few years, China took over and it has retained its position as the world's number one system," said Vipin Chaudhary, former chief executive of Computational Research Laboratories, a subsidiary of Tata Sons that built the EKA supercomputer.

How to improve quality education in graphics understanding mindset of Graphics students.

Dear Graphics Faculties,

Pleas do compulsory Project and Portfolio to all the students of Graphics and Animation before their exam then send for examination if any students have not ready there portfolio or projects dont allow for exam. why i am sharing becoz  on 29th march i was taking exam at Goregaon center there is 20 students for the exam but no body has Profolio or projects , they come with their assignments what any students done in lecture no 1 or 2 .  So pls this is our responsibility to try or help to create their portfolio. 

Some suggestion and advise for better and quality teaching and understanding the students mindset .
  • When you meet first tym dont start software sit with him /her and ask thier background and qualification,intrest .
  • Give a4 size white paper say him / her draw any thing what he can draw dont give any task.
  • Discussed about media and course what he /her taken.
  • Ask about media advertisng and publishing , (print,web etc), 
  • Then start software .
