How Does it Work? Digital Signature Technology for Dummies


Electronic signatures. E-signatures. Digital signatures. These terms get tossed around a lot in the electronic signature industry and are often used interchangeably. But trying to explain the technology behind digital signatures can be much more challenging. You see, they’re based on mathematical algorithms and advanced cryptographic concepts… a bit more complicated to explain than a pen and ink signature! To make digital signatures as simple as opening the Internet, typing in a password, reviewing a document, and clicking the "sign" button. But behind the scenes, our service is busy dealing with all of this complexity because it delivers real value to our customers and their critical documents.
In this post, we’re going to decipher the mysterious world of digital signatures to help you understand why we use this technology and where it came from. Hang on, it might be a bumpy ride!
 

Defining the Benefits

First, let’s start with a definition:
digital signature is a mathematical scheme for demonstrating the authenticity of a digital document. A valid digital signature gives the recipient reason to believe that the message was created by a known sender in a way that they cannot deny sending it (authentication and non-repudiation) and that the message was not altered in transit (integrity).

True digital signatures have very specific benefits:
    • Authentication: It provides various ways to identify a signer (from email verification to a text message to so-called knowledge-based authentication) so those persons can’t later say they didn’t sign the document.

    • Non-repudiation: It walks users through a series of steps to sign a document and tracks all of those steps. Doing so eliminates the possibility of a signer suggesting they made a mistake in signing or never ‘clicked’ a button.

    • Integrity: Documents signed with digital signature alert the reader in real-time if anything has been changed or if there’s any reason not to trust the document. Freely available PDF viewers provide this functionality on- of off-line.

That’s what a digital signature provides in practice. But what about that "mathematical scheme?" How does that technology behind the scenes create such rich benefits?  To understand this better, we need to step back a bit in history.

For thousands of years, civilizations have needed to send and receive secret messages. These secrets usually relied on codes that only the sender and the recipient knew. As long as the sender and receiver kept their knowledge of that code away from others, it would be very difficult to decipher the message in transit.

One example of this ‘shared secret’ method was the scytale, first described in ancient Greek texts. A specific length and thickness of rod would be created, and leather or parchment wrapped around it. The sender inscribed his message on the material, unwrapped it and sent it via a courier. After delivery, the receiver would wrap the length of parchment around a scytale of the same thickness and size to decipher the message.

This type of encryption is also known as a ‘symmetric-key’ system, where both parties use the same key to unlock an encrypted message. This methodology has remained essential to the practice of cryptography even to this day.

However, there is a challenge to this form of cryptography. A shared secret implies that you share the key with another person in order for them to decipher the message. How do you get that key to them securely?
 

Making Keys Public and Private

It wasn’t until the mid-1970s that two clever cryptologists named Diffie and Hellman speculated it might be possible to create a system where the sender had a pair of keys: one public, one private. Both keys were mathematically associated with each other so they could be used to encrypt messages, but in such a fashion that the public key could be shared freely without endangering the private key. The private key would remain protected by its owner.
Other scientists (Rivest, Shamir and Adelman (e.g. RSA)) worked on this idea too and collaborated to create the algorithms and standards at the heart of what’s now known as public key cryptography.

Let’s try to explain in simple terms how this new model works.

The sender, Sam, has a message he wants to send to Rachel. Instead of having to find a way to get a key to Rachel, both Sam and Rachel are using public-key cryptography. They both have a public and private key, and they’ve shared their public keys with one another.

Sam uses Rachel’s public key to encode the message and then sends the encrypted message to Rachel.

Rachel uses her private key to decode (decrypt) the message and read it. Since only she had access to her own private key, no one else could decipher the message. Rachel could reply to the message and encrypt it, in turn, with Sam’s public key before sending it back. Sam would need his private key to unlock the reply.
Encryption is used to keep messages confidential, but what if you want to let people find out if a message was changed or explain precisely who it came from?

The Digital Signature Rises

Diffie, Hellman and others recognized that public key cryptography could not only encrypt messages but also answer these challenges. Since each user in this system possesses a unique key pair, including a private key under their own control, the system could be used to protect the integrity of an individual message and attest that a specific user sent it. In other words, a digital signature.
Let’s see how this works. In this example, Sam and Rachel are still sending messages to each other, but this time Sam not only wants to send a message to Rachel but also wants her to know that it came from him and that it didn’t change after he sent it.

Sam creates his message and also creates a ‘fingerprint’ or digest of the message. He then encrypts this digest with his private key.

Sam then bundles the message, the encrypted fingerprint, and his public key together. This becomes the signed document, which Sam sends to Rachel.

Rachel receives the message and reads it, but wants to be sure it came from Sam unchanged. First, she creates a fingerprint of the message she just read. Then, she takes the encrypted message digest and decodes it using Sam’s public key, which was attached to the message as well.

At this point, Rachel compares the two fingerprints. If they match, the message (1) came from Sam and (2) has not been tampered with.

If it doesn’t match, then one of the above is not true and the message cannot be trusted.

So you’re ready to dive into the world of 3D graphics, the next step now is to choose a program to use, that’s easier said than done, as there are many different 3D applications to choose from. The most popular in the CG industry is 3ds Max and Maya, and a very common question is which 3D application is better? Does one program allow you to create amazing 3D models much faster? And can knowing either 3ds Max or Maya land you that job at your dream studio?
Let’s break down the differences between the two, as well as each program’s strengths and weaknesses and answer the all important question, “Max or Maya?”
The first question that needs to be answered is, “Can knowing either 3ds Max or Maya increase your chances at landing a job?” The answer is simple, no. If you’re weighing the two applications based on if you get brownie points for knowing Maya over 3ds Max or vise versa is probably not a viable question. Skills always comes first among recruiters, if you’re an amazing 3D modeler in Maya, and the job requires you to use 3ds Max then that place will likely train you in 3ds Max, because your work speaks for itself, not the application you used to create it.
That being said, both 3ds Max and Maya both have their strengths and depending on how you want to use the application will determine which program you should choose. There is a reason these two applications have become industry standards, they both are powerful programs, but yes, depending on how you want to use the programs, it might be smart to use one over the other.

What Are You Going to Use it for?

You should ask yourself what you’re going to use the program for, are you wanting to create 3D character models, or create performances through character animation? Or maybe you want to break into game design, so you’ll be using the application for creating game models or game animations. You also might be using the program for architectural visualization, or integrating it within a VFX pipeline for film. Whatever the case may be, you should know exactly what you want to do with the program, because that alone can help you decide what to choose, 3ds Max or Maya.

Rendering

Both applications have the rendering engine mental ray built into the software, so you’re essentially getting the same rendering capabilities in either program. Of course, the workflow may be a little different, but you can get comparable results in either application.

Modeling

3ds Max has a very robust modeling toolset with a huge library of different modifiers which can make the modeling process easier. Depending on how new you are to the world of 3D then modeling in 3ds Max can be a little easier to grasp. If you’re familiar with the Booleon operation, 3ds Max is also known to work much easier and smoothly than in Maya. It may seem like a simple command is not a big deal, but it can actually go along way.
If you’re going to get into the architectural visualization like interiors and buildings, 3ds Max really caters to this type of artist, giving you the option of 3ds Max Design which is a favorite program among architects and designers.
Modeling in Maya is a little less forgiving, and some complex models can be a little harder to accomplish, but with the release of Maya 2014 and the modeling toolkit it has brought in some very powerful modeling tools that really begins to level the playing field, with some great re-topology tools and a faster workflow.

Animation

For the most part, Maya has been known to be a much more powerful application when it comes to animation, with a huge library of animation tools. It’s also very customizable if you know a bit of MEL or Python which are the scripting languages in Maya. For example, Blue Sky Studios uses Maya for all their animation and rigging tasks.
That’s not to say animation in 3ds Max is bad, not in the slightest, and for the most part the exact same animation could be accomplished in either application, but when it comes to ease of use, and the amount of tools available, Maya is the stronger of the two.

Rigging

When it comes to rigging, Maya pulls ahead slightly in this category as well. However, it does require a bit more programming in MEL if you want to create complex character rigs. Now, with 3ds Max it can be a bit easier to rig, but you can create complex rigs in Maya that might be very difficult to achieve in 3ds Max.

Where Maya Shines

Maya’s proprietary scripting language MEL is highly customizable, and that is one reason why Maya can be found a lot in the film industry because studios like to be able to create their own set of tools that can help them achieve their job much easier.
Maya has really been know as the go-to app for 3D animators among the industry for its robust rigging and animation tools and its animator friendly workflow.
You also have the choice of Maya LT which is a huge benefit among new game developers as it’s a relatively cheap subscription cost, of course, you don’t have access to as many of the features of the full version of Maya, but you still have the most important to a game designer, like modeling, animation and texturing.

Where 3ds Max Shines

3ds Max has been known for its powerful modeling tools, allowing you to create complex 3D models with a very fast workflow and robust modifiers, with the entire poly modeling tools contained in one area of the UI. It also has some really great architectural visualization capabilities that Maya really doesn’t have.
If you’re brand new to CG 3ds Max can be a little simpler to grasp, and can seem a little less daunting than Maya, making it a bit more user friendly.

The Big Factor

The biggest factor of choosing between the two actually has nothing to do with the application’s toolset, but your operating system. Maya is available to Windows, Linux, and OSX platforms. 3ds Max on the other hand is only available to Windows operating systems, which means if you’re a Mac or Linux user, 3ds Max is probably not the best choice.

The Verdict

You should really know what you’re going to use the app for; because this can help you decide which program to choose, and each program has different strengths when it comes to the different tasks, like modeling, or animation.
If you want to get into character animation, Maya may be the best choice. However, 3ds Max still has great animation capabilities, but Maya has a slight edge over it with its deeper list of tools.
When it comes to modeling, either software is going to get the job done; it really comes down to which workflow you like more. 3ds Max has a robust modeling toolset, but Maya has recently enhanced their tools as well.
3ds Max has typically been seen as the 3D app for the game industry, and it is known to have a bit more flexibility and options; however Maya LT is also a great cost effective choice when it comes to game development.
If you’re going to be doing a lot of architectural visualization then 3ds Max is probably going to be your best bet. Of course, you can do architectural work in Maya, but 3ds Max Design is integrated with some of the other design software like AutoCAD.

Is One Truly Better Than the Other?

There’s going to be some mixed opinions about the different applications. Someone who’s used 3ds Max for years might say Maya is not a good choice, and similarly a Maya vet might say 3ds Max is a weaker program. In most cases, that may be true — for them. Once you get familiar with a particular interface and workflow, it can be a lot faster to move around with that workflow than to try another workflow.
But when you’re first starting out and looking to learn something new, it really comes down to personal preference for one simple reason: At the end of the day their purposes are similar and a lot of the tools accomplish the exact same thing. For example, there’s the extrude command in both applications, and you’re able to set keyframes and have access to a curve editor. It’s up to you, the artist, to determine how those tools are used in different ways to achieve great things.
The best option is to try a free trial for both applications, and test the waters, see which workflows you like more. If you’re a more experienced artist who has been learning a specific program, and suddenly you’re wondering, “Have I been learning the wrong program this whole time?” There is no need to be worried, because the quality of your work is the most important thing, not the application you create it with. It’s apparent that both 3ds Max and Maya are extremely powerful programs. 10 Steps to Start a Blog with WordPress.org



Start a blog using WordPress.org, but you're not sure what to do first.  That's a common problem, and it can be intimidating.  However, the process is actually very easy if you follow the basic steps listed below.

1.  Get a Hosting Account.

Choose a Web hosting provider who will store your blog content and display it to visitors.  For beginners, basic hosting plans are typically adequate.  Try to find a blog host who offers two specific tools: a cpanel and Fantastico, which are two tools that make it extremely easy to upload WordPress and manage your blog.  
    2.  Get a Domain Name.
    Take some time to determine what domain name you want to use for your blog, and purchase it from your blog host or another domain registrar of your choice.  

    3.  Upload WordPress to Your Hosting Account and Associate It with Your Domain Name.

    Once your hosting account is active, you can upload WordPress to your account and associate it with your domain name.  If your host offers a tool like Fantastico, you can upload WordPress directly from your hosting account with a few simple clicks of your mouse and associate it to the appropriate domain name with a few more clicks.  Each host has slightly different steps to upload WordPress and associate it with the right domain in your account, so check your host's guidelines, tutorials and help tools for specific instructions for installation. If your host offers SimpleScripts one-click installation of WordPress, you can follow the instructions to install WordPress with SimpleScripts.
    4.  Install Your Theme.
    If you want to use a theme that is not included in the default WordPress theme gallery, you need to upload it to your hosting account and blog.  You can do this through your WordPress dashboard by selecting Appearance --Add New Themes--Upload (or similar steps depending on the version of WordPress you're using).  You can also upload new themes through your hosting account if you prefer.  Read the following articles for help in choosing a theme for your blog:

    Take a few minutes to check the various settings available through your WordPress dashboard and make any modifications that you want so your blog displays and works the way you want it to.  You can change settings related to your author profile, how posts are displayed, if your blog allows trackbacks and pings, and more. 

    7.  Make Sure Your Comment Moderation Settings are Set up Correctly.

    Successful blogs include a lot of conversations through the comments feature.  Therefore, you need to configure your blog's comment moderation settings to fit your blogging goals.  Following are several articles that can help you as you set up your blog's discussion settings.

    Measuring the speed of a computer network can get complicated, but ultimately what matters to most people is how well the network responds when they are trying to accomplish some task. Just how fast your computer network needs to be depends on the usage model. In general, as more devices and people share a network, the network's overall speed (measured in terms of bandwidth and latency) must be to support the total load.

     Network Speed for Web Surfing

    Basic Web surfing can be done over anyspeed of networking, including very slowdial-up Internet. The time required to a load a Web page increases significantly on low-speed connections, however.Broadband Internet connections of 512 Kbps or higher support Web surfing adequately, although higher speed connections help with pages that have embedded graphics and other rich content.
    Besides network bandwidth, Web surfing is also sensitive to network latency. Web surfing over satellite Internet connections, for example, takes longer than for wired broadband Internet services offering the same bandwidth, due to the high latency of satellite.
     Network Speed for Email and IM
    Sending text over computer networks requires minimal bandwidth. Even old, slow dial-up Internet connections adequately support instant messaging and Web-based email. However, large attachments sent through email or IM transfer slowly over lower-speed connections. A one megabyte attachment sent over a dialup may take 10 minutes or more to transfer across the connection, while the same attachment can send in only a few seconds over a good broadband link.

     Network Speed for Television and Movie Streaming

    Video streams utilize more or less network bandwidth based on resolution and frame rate of the content being viewed along with the codec technology used to compress and decode the individual frames. Standard definition television, for example, requires 3.5 Mbps on average, while DVD movie quality steaming requires up to 9.8 Mbps. High-definition video television typically requires 10-15 Mbps, and Blu-ray video up to 40 Mbps. The actual bit rate of a given video fluctuates up and down over time based on the content; movies with complex imagery and greater movement require relatively more bandwidth.

    Required network speeds for video conferencing are similar to television, except that video conferencing products offer lower resolution and quality options that can reduce the bandwidth requirements considerably. Personal conferencing products like Apple iChat, for example, require 900 Kbps (0.9 Mbps) for a two-person video session. Corporate video conferencing products utilize more bandwidth up to standard definition TV requirements (3-4 Mbps), and three- and four-way sessions also increase the speed requirements further.

    Compared to video, audio streaming requires much less network bandwidth. High-quality Internet radio typically broadcasts at 128 Kbps, while podcast or music clip playback requires no more than 320 Kbps.
